Did you write your will yet?

2 03 2008

Bismillahi rahmani raheem.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It is not permissible for any Muslim who something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready with him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Wasaayaa 2533).

“It is prescribed for you, when death approaches any of you, if he leaves wealth, that he makes a bequest to
parents and next of kin, according to reasonable manners. (This is) a duty upon Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)”
[al-Baqarah 2:180]

On the authority of al-Baraa ibn ‘Aazib (radhi-yallaahu ‘anhu) who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam), he suddenly looked towards a group (of people) and said:

((For what reason have they gathered here?))

It was said: In order to dig a grave.

So the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) became alarmed and startled and he quickly went ahead of his Companions until he reached the grave, then he knelt upon it, and I turned my face towards him (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam), in order to see what he was doing. He (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) cried until the earth became wet with his tears, then he turned to us and said:

((O my brothers! Prepare for a day like this)).

al-Bukhaaree in at-Taareekh, Ibn Maajah, Ahmad and others. It is a hasan hadeeth as indicated by Shaykh al-Albaanee in Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah

‘Ataa. said:

((‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez used to gather the fuqahaa. every night and they would (all) remember death, the Day of Judgment and the Hereafter and then they would weep)).

Siyar A’laam an-Nubalaa. – Volume 5, Page 138

It is reported from Al-Awzâ’î that he said:

Whoever remembers death often will find a small amount (of worldly things) sufficient for him; and whoever includes his speech in his deeds will speak little.

Al-Dhahabî , Siyar A’lâm Al-Nubalâ` in his biography of Al-Awzâ’î.

On the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar (radhi-yallaahu ‘anhumaa) who said:

((If you live until the evening, then do not expect to live until the following morning. And if you live until the morning, then do not expect to see the evening. Take from your health for your sickness and from your life for your death)).

The above link is a document of a Muslim’s will. I would urge all of us to share with our family and friends. All of us should try to have a will written in order for our burial to be done according to the Quran and sunnah . Keep in mind ya ikhwan having a will is the minimum form of action one takes to prepare for death.

I came across this document as I was reading from the beneficial knowledge Dr Saleh as-Saleh (rahimahollah) has left behind. May Allah grant him the highest levels of janatul firdous and reward him for every word he uttered for the sake of Allah.

Barkaallahu feekum, I hope we can make use of this, and insha’Allah it would be a great benefit to us bi’dnillah.
