VATICAN CITY (March 30) – Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism as the world’s largest religion, the Vatican newspaper said Sunday.

“For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us,” Monsignor Vittorio Formenti said in an interview with the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano. Formenti compiles the Vatican’s yearbook.He said that Catholics accounted for 17.4 percent of the world population — a stable percentage — while Muslims were at 19.2 percent.

“It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make a lot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer,” the monsignor said.

Formenti said that the data refer to 2006. The figures on Muslims were put together by Muslim countries and then provided to the United Nations, he said, adding that the Vatican could only vouch for its own data.

When considering all Christians and not just Catholics, Christians make up 33 percent of the world population, Formenti said.

Spokesmen for the Vatican and the United Nations did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment Sunday.

One of the most effective ways of dealing with worries about the future is to recite this du’aa’ which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to recite:

“Allaahumma aslih li deeni alladhi huwa ‘ismatu amri, wa aslih li dunyaaya allati fiha ma’aashi, wa aslih li aakhirati allati ilayha ma’aadi, waj’al al-hayaata ziyaadatan li fi kulli khayr, wa’l-mawta raahatan li min kulli sharr (O Allaah, correct my religious commitment which is the foundation of my life, and correct my worldly affairs in which is my livelihood, and grant me good in the Hereafter to which is my return. Make my life a means of accumulating good, and make death a respite for me from all evil).” (Narrated by Muslim, 2720).

ومن أنفع ما يكون في ملاحظة مستقبل الأمور استعمال هذا الدعاء الذي كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يدعو به : ” اللهم أصلح لي ديني الذي هو عصمة أمري ، وأصلح لي دنياي التي فيها معاشي ، وأصلح لي آخرتي التي إليها معادي ، واجعل الحياة زيادةً لي في كل خير ، والموت راحةً لي من كلِّ شر ” رواه مسلم 2720)

House Burned in Fire – Family Needs Help

On February 1st, 2008, a Muslim family of 7 children were caught in a house fire in Ottawa, Canada. Fatuma Hersi, the mother, attempted to get all 7 children out of the house. The youngest child, Khalid Ali, 2 yrs, ran in the wrong direction and didn’t make it out of the house alive. Inna lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raji’oon. His father, Abdi Ali, was at to work Tuesday evening and called to check in on his family before the fire.

Not only did the family lose their youngest son and brother, they lost everything in their home. They walked away with the clothing on their back. But, they did not lose everything. They still have their generous Muslim brothers and sisters in North America. We have lost a son, we have lost a brother.

Alhamdulilah, the community of Ottawa within 24 hours have donated enough clothing for the familiy. They are most in need of monetary help. Alhamdulilah, in less than 24 hours, brothers and sisters have donated almost $1,000. Please help this family in need by donating whatever it is you can. Remember, this could have been your family.

Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Messenger (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“The gates of Paradise will be opened on Monday and on Thursdays, and every servant [of Allah] who associates nothing with Allaah will be forgiven, except for the man who has a grudge against his brother. [About them] it will be said, ‘Delay these two until they are reconciled. Delay these two until they are reconciled.
